On the occasion of the Jules Verne year 2005, the Dutch Jules Verne Society published a book about Jules Verne and the Low Countries: “In de ban van Jules Verne”.

This book consists of two parts. The first part is an extensive biography by Guus Luijters, writer, journalist, expert on French literature and member of the Dutch Jules Verne Society. Based on primary and secondary sources, such as Verne’s correspondence with his family and his publisher, old and new biographies, and a visit to the places where Jules Verne lived, Guus Luijters sketches an image of the man behind the novelist.

The second part contains articles written by members of the Dutch Jules Verne Society, in which various aspects of the life and works of Jules Verne are addressed: the Dutch editions of his stories, his visits to the Netherlands and Belgium, the Dutch and Belgian characters in his stories, etc. The many illustrations in the book were mainly provided by our member Frits Roest.

The book “In de ban van Jules Verne” was presented on Friday, 1 April, during the festive opening of the Jules Verne exhibition in Rotterdam.
